The 16th annual Fremont Relays was held on Sunday May 19th on a dark, damp, chilly and dreary day at Lake Elizabeth in Fremont.
Shortly before the skippers meeting one of the hardier El Toro sailor’s said “Lets go for a sail” and so the races began.
The nine El Toros were tied to the wet dock facing inward amongst various assortment of “Goose POO”. After the Le Mans start, as the boats slowly began the race, the remaining sailors along with Tom, Bonnie and Hannah Rankin threw flowers in the Toro’s wake in honor of their late father and grandfather Jack Rankin who was an avid El Toro Sailor and member of the Fremont Sailing Club.
After sailing for 45 minutes under patchy sunshine, and a few cloudbursts, the team of Chase Englehart and Rebecca Bauman hit the dock followed by the team of Walt Andrews and Tom Rankin. The team of Fred Paxton and Hayden Lahr were third after the first leg.
An hour and 42 minutes after the first leg the skippers sailing the second leg of the course began to arrive for the exchange. Again the teams of Englehart-Bauman were in first place, followed by the teams of Andrews –Rankin and Paxton -Lahr.
Some four hours after the start, and sailing in winds of ½ mph with gusts to maybe 1 mph the boats began to arrive at the exchange position to start the third leg. The positions at the end of the third leg were the final results for the 2019 Fremont Relays.
In order to meet the city’s curfew for the lake we cancelled the final leg. All of the sailors enjoyed the infrequent sunny and damp conditions.
The race couldn’t have been held had it not been for, Kathy Federico, Joyce Andrews, Gene Arrillaga, Roy Jordan and Helga Wolff. Helga purchased the food and helped Kathy with the registration.
Roy Jordan kept the food and cooks dry with his shelter. Roy also drove the unused crash boat. Lap counters were Kathy and Joyce and they also managed the finish line. Gene handled the cooking.

As in the past the T-Shirts were passed out on a random basis. The T-Shirts were obtained by Tom Federico and the trophies were again donated by Pete Blasberg, who celebrated his 97th birthday on May 21st.
