August 3, 2025
by Earl Thomas #5121
Commodore & Fleet 62 Captain
Ahoy Fall Sailors, (yeah It's that time of the year already)

We had clear blue skies with a typical northerly wind building all morning, 3-8 mph wind, We had good and fresh donuts in the morning to get us going. Thank you to Oliver and Fiona for the well curated sprinkles collection. We got in 5 races, in the Fall 1,2,3 series and we started under the El toro class flag on Sunday as they tied with the Lidos for the largest fleet showing. Roy did the Race Committee well, thank you.

We had 2 Lidos, 2 El Toros, four Open boats; Harold and Maria and kids, Yossi and his daughter, Anthony Zucca (new person), Tony, Steve, Suli, Don J., Richard (Foam fish), Russ (Sunfish) and myself with Don and Anthony.

Yossi and his daughter did very well today in a Zest. They both look like they have sailed together for years. He got the Zest moving. But he lamented that the Lido just had more sail area. Suli was in a Zest for awhile but she headed in early. It is good to see the Zest class growing.

Richard broke his main? sheet and got a little wet and quickly headed in. Those engineering prototypes are a work in process.

Tony Su capsized on a gybe around the starting pin, when a gust hit him at the exactly the wrong time but he recovered. Steve was trying to learn from Tony before the races as to tips to go faster, especially about the main bridle. Hopefully he benefited a little.

Harold and I rubbed rails at the start of one race. No damage but they headed way to do a turn, starboard/port. I forgot one of the courses that included the reaching mark and lost my lead over Harold & Maria in another race.  Harold pushed me away from the windward mark once, within his rights and they got the lead back. I chose unwisely and should have called leeward and forced him up instead. They got all firsts in the Lido class.

Russ in his Sunfish was the quickest today by far. Kicking everyone’s butt. We had a couple of individual OCS’s today but everyone corrected their error and restarted.

The muggle traffic was medium to heavy when we started the racing but dwindled all day as the wind picked up. There were some beginning solo sailing classes in Capris going on, which we steered clear of. At one race we had two young paddleboarders in the water right at our starting line. We dodged them and the rescue boat came to pick them up. But they were just getting blown down wind toward the shore and golf course.

I went out with Don as crew for one race. Then took Anthony for the remainder of races. He did well and and skippered the boat at the end while we returned to the docks at the end of the day. Anthony contacted me last week and was interested in buying a Lido. So he can to check us and Lidos out as part of his buying process. I think he will join our club and continue to sail with us. I know a guy who can hook him up with a newish Lido. Anthony got the hang of setting the whisker pole pretty quickly. And we were able catch up to Harold & Maria on most downwind runs. He even knew about trimming the jib and was a good look out for traffic ahead. He definitely has some sailing experience.

Thank you to Suli and Don for snacks after the races. It was good to have an energy boost while de-rigging and a chance to commiserate about the days sailing, both misfortunes and victories. Harold & Maria and I shared our adventures at the Lido 14 CCR with everyone after the races. We showed off our new red regatta shirts we received for participating.  I hope we will not be a victim of the Star Trek curse that the red shirts are the first one’s to die in each episode.

We need a volunteer for RC on our next races on August 24, any takers. Remember this is a volunteer club and we need to spread around the responsibilities. And our final races of the year are on September 7th. Hopefully we will get a chance to see all of our missing sailors before the years end.

Special note for the Lidos, our District 2 Championships will be on Sept. 13-14 in Stockton.

And the Zoom meeting is still on, every Thursday night at 7:30pm.
