June 10, 2025
by Earl Thomas #5121
Commodore & Fleet 62 Captain
Sunday’s sailing was a good showing of all our clubs dinghies with 3 Lidos, 2 El Toros, 1 Zest, 1 Sunfish, 1 Fauxfish. We did 6 races today, a lot of course 4 and then 2. The wind was calm to start, coming out of the north and it built all day up to 8-9 mph. A little gusty later as it filled in. We had 2 people in our Lido on the rail hiking for half the day. Overall no major incidents, good communications between boats and close passes by all was the theme of today. We are starting to get a better understanding of the rules. Thank you John.

Ralf, Suli and Ming were crew today in the Lidos. Ming Liu is a new sailor who showed up today and rode with Suli and myself. He is an experienced sailor and did well today learning the ropes in a Lido. I hope he returns. The three of us were getting the hang of '3 handed Lido' and were doing some nice crisp tacks later in the day. Adrian tried to launch is Capri Cyclone but was not feeling well enough to launch. Chris Nicol and a photographer(?) got some photos and videos from one of the Shoreline powerboats. I hope to see those.

John and Jill Christman handled the RC duties well, thank you. John brought his numbered pennants for the course designations. And that worked out well. We are in need of future RC volunteers, so join us on this Thursday night’s Zoom call training session to get up to speed on the duties of race committee.

Harold, Maria, Oliver and Fiona Ho were in their Lido and lead the pack today. I think I need to get a couple of young kids in my boat to go faster.  These old people are slowing me down. Oliver and Fiona celebrated their birthday on Sunday ( but it’s actual on Monday ) and so they enjoyed some sailing and a birthday lunch at the Shoreline Cafe.

Simon did very well today with Ralf crewing. He had a newer tiller and extension that seemed to make the control better. He borrowed a whisker pole and used it well. His ongoing Lido project is coming along nicely. But there always seems to be just one more project. I think his triumph today was a first place finish in one of the Lido races.

Tony and Steve battled it out all day in their prams while trading the lead back and forth. I saw Steve finish first in one race, good job. Though a broken halyard ended his day early. Boats are fun and frustrating at the same time. One more project to solve before the next races.

Roy was a speed demon today and zipped around passing all of us. He points higher and goes faster on close hauled so we were was always looking at his transom about 30 yards ahead.

Richard brought his Fauxfish and had troubles from the start as something broke and his sail was down quickly, and he was forced back to the docks.

And last we have Yossi in his rented Zest. A huge improvement over the Capri from previous outing.  He was keeping up with us all and competing. It seemed he and I were always meeting at the same point on the lake at crossings or on close hauled out to the corners. He was frustrated by the fact that our Lido always seemed to be just a little faster than his Zest. Which is nice and shocking to hear since I rarely hear fast and Lido in the same sentence. I am sure he will kick our butts soon enough.

Shoreline was having their capsize drills near the docks from 12:15 until 1pm so we avoided the area for the safety of all. And we just kept sailing instead.

We had a very nice ‘almost’ catered affair after sailing with sandwiches and drinks and apples and chips for all, courtesy of Don Jedlovec. Thank you Don. As we enjoyed the food and drink we hung around and discussed incidents and the rules from the day. With John helping us clarify the situations. We are in need of future snack volunteers for our next races. Anyone?

Please check out some photos that Don took on Sunday. Great action shots. It looks like we are really sailing out there. Here is a link to browse and download individually.

Thanks to all for helping to schlepp the RC boat and gear in and out of the water. A special thanks to Tony, Steve, Suli and Don for hanging around later and disassembling and stowing the other club gear into my truck.

Our next races are on Sunday July 22. And Happy Father's Day to all on next Sunday. And we have our race committee Zoom training session on this Thursday night at 7:30pm.

I hope to some of our regular sailors back on the water next time or at least sometime this season.
