by Earl Thomas #5121
Commodore & Fleet 62 Captain
We are about to start 2025 with a new and exciting season of dinghy sailing in the south bay. We are trying to build on our last year's successes that included many new members and more opportunities to sail. Our home waters are the Shoreline Lake in Mountain View, California. But we also venture out to several other venues in the bay area, including the Alameda Estuary, Sacramento, Lake Merritt, Richmond Yacht Club and Redwood City. The Fremont Sailing Club was established 57 year old ago to promote and facilitate sailing opportunities in the south San Francisco Bay.

Our kick-off event this year will be the second annual ’SAIL-A-DINGHY-DAY’ on Sunday April 6th at Shoreline. It’s a chance to meet us, look at several different types of dinghies that we sail and the dinghies that are available at Shoreline. Perhaps one of them is right for you. You will also have a chance to go on a free sailboat ride in one of the dinghies, to see if sailing is your next passion. Please join us and get your questions answered and your feet wet.

Our normal sailing season includes a minimum of 27 races over 9 different days throughout the spring, summer and fall. All our sailors try their best at winning their class races which includes the Lido 14, El Toros and the Open class (which includes all other types of dinghies). We race on Sundays (see our schedule here on the website). We rig our boats in the morning, have a skipper’s meeting at 10:30 am, start racing about 11:00am and usually are finished by 3:00pm.

We are excited to have a few new boats added to the club this year primarily Lido 14’s, which are 14’ long sloops that normally races with 2 people but can take more passengers. So the Lido racing will be bigger, better and closer competition this year. The other boats in the club include the El Toros which are single handed quick 8’ long boat, the Sunfish which is a sleek single handed lateen rigged boat as well as Lasers, Hobies, Capris and Windsurfers.

If you are just getting started in sailing then joining our club and crewing on a boat is a good way to begin learning all the things needed, like rigging the boat, launching, sailing upwind and downwind, sailing rules and terminology. Stop by or contact us so we can find a place for you on one of the boats.

Additionally there are sailing lessons available from the Shoreline Lake Boathouse which includes beginning, intermediate and advanced lessons. Those classes also qualify you to rent sailboats at Shoreline. Which is another way to make sure you can sail with us at each race day.

Please contact us with any questions. And we hope to see you on the water soon.
